EARS

What does it take to become King?
aside the usual explanations - genes, money, God, greed, chance.
It now seems it’s partly ears.
Yes, EARS!
Not how or what they hear or look
but their relative proportions:
the way they sit on the skull.

So, to find our natural, alpha dudes
all we need is to survey and measure the populations ears!
Saves a lot of bother,
instead of wars and votes and cunning.
Natural selection by Ear - easy!
Which, be sure, says nothing as to character, good or bad
whether psychopath, tyrant, or saint;
Just what it takes to lead, be boss,
staying on top against all odds, keeping opposition at bay, regardless.

For a term. One lifespan max
(unless jinxed and side-stepped by dynastic ambition….)

For these ears also
are the instigators of revolution,
evolutions own stick and carrot brigades,
through the generations and centuries.

The moot question is:how to get rid of
or demote them
- these Ear-instated, self-maintaining overlords,
ahead of their time,
clam-welded to their state and status
as they are.
Every word and deed being reinforced
by their subjects’ abeyance and custom.
Cut off their ears?
Does it have to be a blood-letting?
Or preemptive pogrom?

Or can the people rise above reaction and revenge
to standing their ground,
coming together in peaceful power, civilly disobedient
affirming their collective truth and recognition of its overwhelming force:
that no gun, nor rabble rousing rant can quell.
