Secrets
The trees have their Orphic secrets
the microbe, the fly and the bee:
the proper mysteries at their cores.
But dark shadows and shames
lurk and fester in the human psyche,
the collective underworld;
to mummify and haunt.
We lose sight of the difference
between discretion and presumption;
the limits to human curiosity, hubris
in face of humbling exploration
and the wonder of mystery.
Conscience a heavenly gift,
defiled by the curse of guilt, unworth.
Something to do with recognition
of place.
In relation to where and what.
Mistaking our unholy ego
for that eternal spark:
supposedly divinely chosen - or damned
in a nepotistic mandate and assumption
of privilege and entitlement
unwarranted and illegitimate;
So we swagger like drunken lords
while suffocating on our inner disgusts.
Compassion, forgiveness and truth
long forgot.
